The 7th of October 2024 marks a special day in the existence of Cooll. We are proud to share that our latest adsorption heat pump is now a CE marked appliance!
With this marking, we can officially declare that our heat pump meets all of the legal requirements to be installed throughout Europe. This achievement emphasises the transition of Cooll from the development phase into market introduction and commercialization of its technology.
What is a CE marking?
By affixing the CE marking to a product, a manufacturer declares that the product meets all the legal requirements for CE marking and can be sold throughout the European Economic Area (EEA). Manufacturers play a vital role in ensuring that products placed on the extended single market of the EEA are safe. It is their responsibility to carry out the conformity assessment, set up the technical file, issue the EU declaration of conformity and affix the CE marking to a product. Only then can this product be traded on the EEA market.
In 6 steps to a CE marking
We have successfully followed the 6 steps below in order to obtain the CE mark of our adsorption heat pump:
- Identify the applicable directive(s) / regulation(s) and harmonized standards;
- Verify product specific requirements;
- Identify whether an independent conformity assessment (by a notified body) is necessary;
- Test the product and check its conformity;
- Draw up and keep available the required technical documentation;
- Affix the CE marking and draw up the EU declaration of conformity.
The 6 most applicable Directives and Regulations
Amongst the European directives and regulations the following are most applicable to the adsorption heat pump that we’ve developed:
- Ecodesign requirements for sustainable products – Regulation (EU) 2024/1781
- Gas appliances – Regulation (EU) 2016/426
- Pressure equipment – Directive 2014/68/EU
- Electromagnetic Compatibility – Directive 2014/30/EU
- Low Voltage – Directive 2014/35/EU
- Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment – Directive 2011/65/EU
Appropriate GAR certificates
For the Gas Appliance Regulation (GAR) an independent conformity assessment is required. Cooll has worked with Kiwa as a notified body to obtain the appropriate GAR certificates in December 2023.
The performance measurements, required for the Ecodesign regulation, have been carried out in the specialized laboratory of Fraunhofer ISE in March 2024 and resulted in the energy label A+. In addition, Cooll has investigated conformity to the other applicable directives, regulations and harmonized standards, prepared all necessary technical documentation.
This has resulted in affixing the CE marking to the first heat pump, that will be installed on short notice. Two additional CE marked appliances will be installed for thorough testing throughout the winter of 2024. With these demonstrations, Cooll is preparing for a wider market introduction in collaboration with partners, targeting the winter of 2025.
